We have recently unveiled two pieces of furniture (JAK de-escalation couch and Ellern Mede NG feeding couch) designed to make physical intervention practices safer and more dignified for patients as well as staff.

Identifying a lack of purpose-designed products, we worked closely with Andy Johnston -an experienced independent mental health consultant- to ensure every angle of the JAK De-escalation couch was carefully considered to enable respectful methods ofrestraint while providing invaluable supportfor staff.

Ellern Mede Specialist Eating Disorder Services were consulted during the design of a version of the couch aimed at making the challenging but sometimes unavoidable process of naso -gastric intubation safer and minimising the counter ther apeutic impact ofthe procedure.

Andy Johnston is a Clinical Director and independent mental health consultant with over 32 years of experience in mental health services including conflictresolution and physical intervention. His team of mental health professionals collaborated in designing the couch and tested prototypes throughoutthe design process ofthe JAK De-escalation couch, using role-play scenarios to testthe ergonomic design over extended periods of high-intensity restraint.

Ellern Mede Specialist Eating Disorder Services are widely regarded as the UK’s most specialist provider of intensive inpatient and outpatient treatmentfor children, adolescents and young adults. With their input, the Ellern Mede NGfeeding couch was developed to provide a safe and stable environmentfor patients undergoing naso-gastric intubation.

We have recently unveiled two pieces of furniture (JAK de-escalation couch and Ellern Mede NG feeding couch) designed to make physical intervention practices safer and more dignified for patients as well as staff. We were pleased to have worked alongside Barnet,
Enfield and Haringey Mental Health Trust and the project’s principal contractor Storm Building during the recentrefurbishment of the Shannon Ward on the ground floor of Dennis Scott Unit at Edgeware Community Hospital. Furniture in hospitals has to withstand high levels of traffic and cope with extensive cleaning to alleviate hygiene concerns. Shannon Ward is an adult acute mental health ward, therefore delivering furniture that provides a non-clinical appearance without negating the importance of hygiene and safety was paramount.

Our Sovie beds were selected alongside our Hamble Plus ranges forthe bedrooms. Sovie offers extreme strength, durability and the outer skin provides a finish thatis waterresistant and antibacterial. The smooth edges ofthe Sovie bed help reduce ligature points and, for extra security, its design allows the bed to be floor fixed to prevent dirt collecting underneath and provide a secure base for patients. Our Fusion chairs are heavily weighted to 45kg with a reinforced plywood seat, which deters mishandling and offers a stable seating solution. An enclosed reinforced base with skis also helps prevent damage to flooring when being moved. These chairs paired with our Cumulus Plus tables help facilitate a secure dining environment alongside providing easy to clean surfaces
